The following are a few games that will spice up your 4th of July experience this year.

Water Balloon Baseball

This is a simple yet exciting game, especially for the kids, and the young at heart. We recommend purchasing red, white, and blue balloons to maintain a patriotic theme. Fill the balloons with water and pitch them to the kids who will then strike the balloons mid-air with a bat. Because the balloons will burst on impact, splashing water to everyone in close proximity, including the batter, there is no need to run to bases around the playing field. You can however make it more interesting by setting up one base where the batter has to run to and then come back to home plate to give way to the next batter. Water Balloon Baseball is not about competition but rather about bringing out everyone’s inner child and deriving joy from the simple act of hitting and popping a water-filled rubber envelope.

Flag Tag

You will need a lot of space for this game, preferably an outdoor field. Divide yourselves into two teams and have each team take one side of the field as its camp. Place five handheld flags on the ground in each team’s camp then clearly demarcate a center line in the field, effectively dividing the two camps. The object of the game is to capture the flags of the opposing team without being tagged and bringing them past the center line to your team’s camp.
If you are, however, tagged by an opponent before making it back to your team’s camp, you must forfeit any flags in your possession and stay put until you are freed when one of your teammates tags you. The winner of the game is the team that captures all the flags from the opposing team’s camp and brings them over the center line to their own camp.

American History Jeopardy

How well do you know your country? History is quite engaging, wouldn’t you agree? Nonetheless, whether you’re a history buff or not, this game is bound to be both entertaining and educational. Divide yourselves into several teams and have each team put together a long list of facts on the history of the country and its independence. Each team will then take a turn to challenge the rest of the teams, posing questions from their list for the other teams to correctly answer. For example, “How many stars are there on the American flag?” or “Name the 50 states that make up the U.S”. Depending on how much time you have, the total number of questions posed by each team can range anywhere between 10 and 100. Each correct answer earns a team one point and the team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.

Water Gun Cup Race

You will need two plastic cups, two long strings, two poles, and two water guns. Cut a small hole in the bottom of each cup and pull a string through the hole. Each cup is to then be tied to a pole using one end of the string going through it. Have a companion hold the other end of the string and step away from the pole until the string is taught, do the same for the other cup.
Pull the cups along the string until they are about two feet away from the individuals holding the strings. Note, the open end of the cups should be facing the people holding the strings and the people holding the strings should be at an equal distance from their respective poles. The competitors will then stand in between the individuals holding the strings and the cups. Once the signal is given they will begin shooting water into the cups using the squirt guns, pushing the cups along the string towards the pole. The winner of the competition will be the first person to push their cup until it touches the pole.

Football Toss

What better time to engage in a truly American sport; football? If for some reason you can’t get your hands on a football on this day, a baseball is a great alternative. Head over to an open field, preferably with some trees, and bring several red, white, and blue hula-hoops with you. Hang the hula-hoops on the trees and assign each hula-hoop a diffrent point value; assign every participant ten tosses. The object is to get the ball through one of the hoops in each toss. The winner of the game is the person who has amassed the most points by the time everyone has had a turn.
